Having the privilege of living by the Beach, I decided the best way to compose this article would be to collect my thoughts, while relaxing on the beach!
Visiting many beaches around the world, “Natural by the Sea” is the answer. If you see, listen and feel, you can bring the beach to your home or office. Any room will do…bedroom, bathroom, office or living room.
Coastal Living Design can be more than simply sea glass, and sea shells. Remember the warm sun, sea breeze and the sound of the waves and seagulls. Make any room feel coastal by painting walls using colors of the ocean, sky, sand or dunes. Even the magnificent colors of a Sunset or Sunrise will do.
Furnishings can include comfortable wicker/rattan with fabulous fabric cushions of delicate to dramatic design and patterns. A down filled sofa encapsulated in linen or cotton, is very relaxing to the feel. Textures enhance dimension so add a bamboo or sisal area rug. Window Fashions can be simply Woven Reed Shades or flowing drapery panels. Simple neutrals, soft pastels and vibrant colors are all coastal choices.
Accessorize wall décor with Seascape views, decorate your tables with coral, conch shells, light houses, sail boats, and other shore like pretties. Do a Fantasy theme as Mermaids, Neptune, God of the Seas; or Caribbean pirates. A favorite I always include, are sea and coastal creatures as dolphins, turtles, dragonflies, even tropical fish or crabs. These themes can be found in accent pillows, fabrics, figurines, bedding, wall art, lighting, and accent furniture. Adding an antique or two can stir some character and personality to your room.
As an Interior Designer who specializes in all Styles of Coastal living, your Beach theme can be a cozy casual feel of a Nantucket cottage to a Mediterranean seaside villa.. One of my favorites is creating a Tropical Island feel utilizing the many beautiful colors of the Birds that exists in these Gardens of Paradise. Or you can simply create a nautical theme with shades of red, white and blue. Lastly, step back in time with the charm of the romantic Victorian era, by the sea; or a rustic Sea Captain’s cottage. Your style can be casual or sophisticated, but always comfortable and tranquil..
Everyone who has visited a Beach somewhere knows the ultimate relaxing experience. Close you eyes and remember,…. and all of your room will happen!
